Alternatives/vs Teal

Laxu Resume vs Teal — when the Chrome extension and tracker are worth it, and when they aren't

Teal is the most popular career-platform tool in the student space, and the Chrome extension is the reason. The job-saving extension is genuinely good — it scrapes a posting, files it into your Teal tracker, and the resulting Kanban view is one of the cleaner job-tracking experiences in the market. We respect Teal. The team has been thoughtful about the product surface for years.

Where the comparison breaks down for many students is the AI tailoring tier. Teal's AI features sit behind their TealHQ+ tier (~$9/week or $79/year as of 2026), and what unlocks at that price is more limited than most students expect. We built Laxu Resume to land at the opposite end of the same problem: the tailoring is the core product (not an upsell), and the tracker comes free. If you want both the polished tracker and serious AI tailoring, this page lays out where each tool actually wins.

The honest part

What Teal does well.

We start here because comparison pages that hide the competitor's strengths read as defensive — and the audience can tell.

  • The Chrome extension. Teal's job-saving extension is the best in this category — it captures the posting cleanly, classifies the company, and drops it into your tracker without you typing.

  • Multi-resume management. Their resume builder lets you maintain multiple versions side-by-side, which is useful if you're applying to wildly different role types (PM internship + research assistant + nonprofit fellowship simultaneously).

  • The job tracker UI. Genuinely well-designed Kanban with detail panes, contacts, and notes. Our tracker is good; theirs has been refined longer.

  • Brand and content. Teal's content marketing (LinkedIn presence, career-coaching blog) is solid, and their community is real. The product feels supported, not abandoned.

The student-fit part

Where Laxu Resume fits a student better.

  • Free tier substance. Teal's free tier is mostly the tracker + extension; serious AI tailoring (cover letters, deep keyword matching, bullet rewrites) sits behind TealHQ+. Our free tier is one complete, fully-unlocked tailored resume — no preview blur.

  • AI tailoring depth. Our tailoring runs Anthropic Opus 4.7 against the JD with explicit anti-fabrication guards and recomputes missing keywords against the tailored output, not the original. Teal's tailoring is faster but shallower.

  • Per-job pricing. Our $0.99 Single Job Pack handles a one-off tailoring without committing to a subscription. Teal's smallest paid commitment is $9/week, billed weekly until canceled.

  • Method tools as free SEO surface. Our STAR / XYZ / Jake's / 6-second tools are free with no signup. Teal doesn't ship equivalents.

  • Honest score positioning. We say "Resume Match Score" and show the component breakdown. Teal's "Match Score" is more opaque about how it's calculated.

Pick the right tool

Who each one is for.

Use Laxu Resume if

Students who want serious AI tailoring as the primary outcome — strong bullet rewrites, missing-keyword analysis, cover letters generated against the JD — without a recurring subscription. Especially good if you're applying to under 30 jobs in a season and the per-tailor pricing model fits.

Use Teal if

Students who apply to dozens or hundreds of roles and want the tracker + Chrome extension to be the central organizing tool, with AI as a secondary enhancement. If you click "save to tracker" on every job board you visit, Teal's extension is genuinely worth $79/year.

Coming from Teal?

Migration in two minutes.

Teal exports your saved jobs as CSV. You can use that list to add jobs to our tracker manually for now, and tailor any of them at /tailor by pasting the JD. We're shipping a bulk import + Chrome extension later this year — you can ask for early access from the dashboard.

FAQ

Things students keep asking.

  • Does Laxu Resume have a Chrome extension like Teal's?

Not yet. Teal's extension is genuinely the best in this category, and we're not going to ship a worse version. We're working on one designed to integrate with the tailoring flow (save the JD + auto-prefill tailoring), targeted for later this year.

  • Is the AI tailoring really better in Laxu Resume than in Teal?

On bullet quality and the cover letter, yes — we run Opus 4.7 with explicit anti-fabrication prompts, and it shows up in the output specificity. On UX speed and integration with your saved jobs list, Teal is faster because it has the extension. The honest answer is they're optimized differently.

  • Can I use both tools?

Plenty of students do. Use Teal's extension to save jobs as you browse, then paste the JD into our tailor flow when you're ready to apply. The combined cost is about the same as Teal alone if you stay on our free or Single Job Pack tiers.

  • Does Teal's match score work the same way as yours?

Both score 0-100 and both are based on JD-resume comparison, but the methodology differs. Ours weights keyword match (40%), hard skills (20%), format (15%), quantification (10%), section completeness (10%), length (5%) and we display the breakdown. Teal's score is a single composite — neither approach is necessarily wrong, but ours is more inspectable.

  • Does Teal pay you to recommend it here?

No. We have no affiliate, partnership, or referral relationship with Teal or Rezi or anyone in the comparison set. We mention what they do well because they actually do it well, and because comparison pages that pretend competitors are bad usually rank worse than ones that don't.

  • Which one should I try first?

If you don't have a tracker yet and you save 5+ jobs a week, install Teal's extension first — it'll save you typing immediately. If you already have a job list and you want a tailored resume now, try our free tailoring (one full result, no preview blur) at /tailor. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Try the actual product before deciding.

One tailored resume is free, with the cover letter and exports unlocked. No watermark, no preview blur, no signup required. That's how comparisons should work.
